My Grandfather

by justin on September 30, 2009

Yesterday I was doing a search for Vashon Media online and ended up on the keypublishing.co.uk forum reading about aviation history. From there I went on to find this photograph of my grandfather in google books. Vashon Media is my webdesign company, that I named afer him and another ancestor, Admiral James Vashon.

The image comes from Mosquito fighter/fighter-bomber units of World War 2, written by Martin W Bowman. My Grandfather is on the right. It was interesting to find and I never knew he was nicknamed Pop. He was a fascinating man who sadly I never got to know. At the time he was commanding 157 squadron.

I have just been reading about your grandfather, mentioned in Wallace McIntosh's book "Gunning for the Enemy" - a book title that caught my eye for obvious reasons. What an amazing man Wing Commander Vashon Wheeler was. I'm certain that today's "softies" could never rise to such heights of heroism. I wonder what all our heroes of ww1 and ww2 would think of today's immigrant and crime ridden Britain, led by a crooked socialist government intent only on staying in power by flooding the country with people who will vote for them. I know my own father, Squadron Leader R.S.Gunning DFC, DFM would be turning in his grave. Now that I'm retired, there are a thousand questions I want to ask him, but it's too late now.

    Kind regards
  • It's an interesting question, heroism though is I think a quality that will never leave us. You just need to look at the likes of Private Beharry who was I think the last man to be awarded the Victoria Cross. I have to agree hat my Grandfather certainly sounds like an interesting man. As far as Britain's crooked socialist government is concerned I have left the country and am not sure there are many circumstances that would bring me back to live. Personally I am inclined to think that most governments leave a lot to desire! I will have to look out for Wallace McIntosh's book, it sounds like an excellent read.
