When I first started trying to blog earlier this year I was following a series of prompts. One of which was  what would be the theme songs to your life be.  I am not sadly the most musical of people but this was a fun exercise.

If you read an earlier post of mine about podcasts you might have noticed one of my favourite podcasts was the Desert Island Discs one. This is a long running BBC radio show that started in the 50s and is still going strong today. In it you are asked what music you would take with you to a desert island and you are allowed 8 tracks.

And so here is my current list of theme songs. Do you know what yours are?

I think the first single I ever bought was a song called The Safety Dance by Men without Hats. I think even as a young child I knew I couldn’t dance very well, but I did enjoy it… and I rather liked the lyrics…

We can dance if we want to
We can leave your friends behind
‘Cause your friends don’t dance and if they don’t dance
Well, they’re no friends of mine

And I am pretty sure that deserves a place in the theme tunes to my life.

Possibly one of my favourite songs of all time is Heroes by David Bowie. Not the first time this song has appeared on my blog. Perhaps a cliche, but what a brilliant song. Apparently this was inspired when David Bowie saw two lovers sitting under a guard turret by the Berlin Wall. Odd to think that no longer exists!

I, I will be king
And you, you will be queen
Though nothing will drive them away
We can beat them, just for one day
We can be Heroes, just for one day

And you, you can be mean
And I, I’ll drink all the time
‘Cause we’re lovers, and that is a fact
Yes we’re lovers, and that is that

Though nothing, will keep us together
We could steal time,
just for one day
We can be Heroes, for ever and ever
What d’you say?

Another great song was from the Pet Shop Boys called Opportunities, and I just loved the lyrics.

I’ve got the brains, you’ve got the looks
Let’s make lots of money
You’ve got the brawn, I’ve got the brains
Let’s make lots of money

With lyrics like this what isn’t there about it to make it want to be a theme song! Just a shame I don’t have the brains. 😉

Some time ago I owned a restaurant in London and after we stopped serving food it became a bit of a club. Periodically we played some fantastic 1980’s cheesy music. One of my favourites here was by BananaRama and was called Robert de Niro’s waiting.

Hopes dashed to the floor
Like shattered teenage dreams
Boys livin’ next door
Are never what they seem

A walk in the park can become a bad dream
People are starin’ and followin’ me
This is my only escape from it all
Watchin’ a film or a face on the wall

Another song I absolutely love is by BassHunter and is called All I ever wanted. I can’t remember when I first heard it but it is one I really like.

All I ever wanted
Was to see you smiling
I know that I love you
Oh baby why don’t you see?

All I ever wanted
Was to see you smiling
All I ever wanted
Was to make you mine
I know that I love you
Oh baby why don’t you see
That all I ever wanted
Was you and me

I was recently at my nephew’s wedding and Oli had asked Tom another one of my nephews to record a video of the day. What Tom did which I really enjoyed was got various people at the wedding reception to lip sync a few of the words from Bruno Mars’ Marry Me. Anyway looking back at the end result it has to be said that I thought it was really fun, and I like the idea of including this song in my theme songs, despite the fact it is one I only really heard recently.

It’s a beautiful night,
We’re looking for something dumb to do.
Hey baby,
I think I wanna marry you.

Is it the look in your eyes,
Or is it this dancing juice?
Who cares baby,
I think I wanna marry you.

And you have probably already seen this, probably one of the most famous marriage proposals of the Social Media Generation but if not get your handkerchief’s out…. it’s a bit of a tear jerker!

I mentioned before how I can’t dance but I enjoy it. If you don’t believe me the photo below should probably prove it. One track that I really enjoy is I’ve got a feeling by The Black Eyed Peas. Definitely makes me want to move.

Justin DancingI gotta feeling that tonight’s gonna be a good night
That tonight’s gonna be a good night
That tonight’s gonna be a good, good night

Tonight’s the night
Let’s live it up
I got my money
Let’s spend it up

And since I live in Peru and have always liked Simon & Garfunkel, I think I should include their song, El Condor Pasa – this is perhaps Peru’s most famous song and is based on a 1913 song by the Peruvian composer Daniel Alomía Robles. Apparently when my brother got to Machu Picchu he was a little surprised to hear Simon and Garfunkel being played badly on the pan pipes. I don’t think he realised that it was in fact a traditional Peruvian Song…

I’d rather be a sparrow than a snail.
Yes I would.
If I could,
I surely would.
I’d rather be a hammer than a nail.
Yes I would.
If I could,
I surely would.
