There are a few things in life that are certain… We are born, we die.

Pretty much everything else is in a state of flux…

Emmet Brown created the Flux Capacitor in back to the future and it was this that enabled him to drive his Delorean through time…

And time travel showed us that very minor changes in the past can have huge impacts in the future.  It’s a great and fun movie and if you haven’t seen it then you probably should…

A message that has come up a lot recently, probably because it ties in to the New Year and Resolutions and better habits is that Change is a very powerful thing.

I read this quote earlier today from Benjamin Franklin, who was known for being particularly smart:

Most people die at 25 but aren’t buried until they’re 75.

It’s rather a frightening thought – but if you are reading this it isn’t too late…

I think what Franklin is saying though is that most people are conditioned to live their life in a certain way by their mid 20’s and unless they are aware of that and resolve to keep growing then nothing  complacency nothing will really change over the following 50 years.

I have changed more than I suspect most – part of that I think is because I am completely unemployable so I have had to change to survive… but outside of my career path I was heading for a pretty unhealthy end, until 2013 at least.

I smoked, I was morbidly obese, didn’t exercise at all and this was seeping into other areas of my life. I had little energy and had really stopped trying to make changes in my life.

Fortunately for me something happened which I have written about elsewhere in this blog and I started on the path to a healthier me, and now I am getting on for being fitter than I have ever been, I have much more energy and have numerous interesting projects on the go.

Indeed this very blog post has come about as part of a new commitment for 2015 to continue changing…

Matt Cutts did a fantastic Ted talk on trying something new for 30 days… and this idea of making small commitments is incredibly powerful.

Worth the three and a half minutes or so it takes to watch:

If you have ever had a leak you will know that what starts off a small rather irritating drip…. drip…. drip…. can eventually if left unfixed become a downpour…

In much the same way the power of one very small change can lead to bigger and better things faster than you can ever imagine.

I leave you with this quote from trainspotting…

“Choose a life. Choose a job. Choose a career. Choose a family. Choose a fucking big television. Choose washing machines, cars, compact disc players and electrical tin openers… Choose DSY and wondering who the fuck you are on a Sunday morning. Choose sitting on that couch watching mind-numbing, spirit crushing game shows, stucking junk food into your mouth. Choose rotting away in the end of it all, pishing your last in a miserable home, nothing more than an embarrassment to the selfish, fucked up brats you spawned to replace yourself, choose your future. Choose life… But why would I want to do a thing like that?”

What are you going to choose? And what are you going to change? Let me know in the comments.

The more you can commit to changing the more fun I believe your life will be.
